Does my short reflection paper need a table of contents in Turabian?

No! You only need a table of contents when you have a longer paper that requires multiple subject headings or chapters. Short papers, such as a 2 page reflection paper, do not need a table of contents.

The Gateway Seminary Turabian Standards will give you further guidance in Turabian style.


Where can I find the library and research videos my professor wants me to watch?

If you've been asked to watch Library Videos 1-5, or some other combination, you can find these videos through the Gateway Seminary website under Academics > Student Success >Research and Writing. Or just follow this link: https://www.gs.edu/academics/student-success/research-and-writing-help/. How do I find journal articles online?

Go to library.gs.edu.

The tab "Seek First" is already selected for you. Type topic or subject terms into the search box below the tabs and click "Find."

There are several ways to limit your results. For most of your coursework, click on the checkbox to the left of your results labeled, "Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals."

This will remove non-academic items such as sermons and devotionals. For more guidance on finding articles for exegesis, click here.


What library benefits do I have as an alumnus?

Alumni have digital access to the ATLA Religion Database. At library.gs.edu, under Research (a section in the middle column), click the "Journal Databases" link. In the dropdown, there is a link called "ATLA Religion for Alumni (EBSCO)". An explanation of additional Alumni library benefits can be found here.

What is the login for online resources?

Please use your library account login for all online resources. Only current students, faculty and staff members have access to online resources, 

How do I place a Hold on a book in the library?

Search in the library catalog (2nd tab on the search box). Remember to limit your results to Gateway Seminary (left column on search results page)

Once you find the book you want to place a hold on, click on the title of the book and then on the Request Hold button in the Check Availability section of the page.

Fill out the popup form and submit the Hold request. For more information here is a detailed explanation of our Holds process


Can I have a book mailed to me?

Yes, if you live more than 10 miles away from one of our campuses and don't take classes on campus, you may request we mail books to you. The library also can scan and send parts of books to you (usually less than 10% of the total pages). Instructions for these are on the ICL/ILL/Bookbag webpage"

How do I find commentaries?

Search for commentaries in the library catalog or Seek First. For search terms, use the name of the book of the Bible you are searching for and the word 'commentary.'

In the search results list, remember to limit the results to Gateway Seminary and 'books' in the left column. Now you will see all the commentaries we have on that book of the Bible.

How do I cite a journal article in Turabian?

Journal article citations need to include the author, article title, journal title, volume & issue number, date or year and the page number/span you are referencing. The GS Turabian Examples handout will help you create a correct citation for the journal article you have. Here is a  sample citation for a journal article:

Can I borrow a book from the library at another Gateway Seminary campus?

Yes! If you are a current student, staff or faculty member, you may place a hold on any book in the Main Collection of any Gateway Seminary campus. CDs, videos and DVDs do not move between campuses. Here is more information about placing Holds and InterCampus Loans.

How do I renew my library books?

To renew your library books, log into your library account (header on library website). Select the titles you want to renew and click Renew above the title list. If your books have already been renewed the maximum number of time, if any are overdue, or if your account is expired, the books will not be able to be renewed. In that case, use Ask Us! or email circulation@gs.edu for assistance. Let them know that you've already tried to renew your books online.

What are my credentials to log into my library account

Use your library account credentials: your Gateway Seminary institutional ID# and the password you created.

New student? Click on My Library Account in the library home page header (https://library.gs.edu), then click on the set/reset link at the bottom of the login form. Follow the instructions and a password change email will be sent to you. Follow the instructions in that email to complete the process. This username/password is also used to log into most of our online resources. Here's an instructional video on creating your library password.

Not able to set up your password? Email circulation@gs.edu with your name, student ID#, address, phone number and personal email address so we can make sure that you are in the library's patron database.


How do I cite a book in Turabian?

This depends on the type of book it is, whether by a single author, editor, etc. The GS Turabian Examples handout will help you create a correct citation for the book you have. Here is a citation for a book by a single author:

How many books can I check out at one time and how long can I have them for?

We have different check-out, renewal, and loan policies for our various patrons. Find your patron category (student, SBC family, Gateway Seminary staff, community, etc.) on this Patron Privileges chart to see how many books you can check out, how long they are checked out for and what other library privileges you have.


How many times may a book be renewed?

Please look up your status on the Patron Privileges form to learn how many renewals you have available. Diploma and Masters students have two 4-week renewals. Post-graduate students have one 16-week renewal and faculty have one 1-year renewal. All other patrons have one 4-week renewal. However, if someone else has requested to borrow the book or if it is recalled, it will not be renewed.
